Once I heard someone conducting a piece of music tell the musicians “I need to really hear those pauses”. While that seems to be a contradictory statement at first, it makes sense on another level. Music depends on rests and pauses to delineate different sections of a musical piece.
A pause to enjoy coffee alone or in a communal experience with others can be a way to stop and rest from endless activity and to just be “in the moment”, mentally as well as physically. It needs to be a pause that allows the feeling of being mindful in the here and now to surface.
As with music, a pause that can be heard is one that is felt as well when the music stops, a coffee pause can be a rest that can be felt and is best when it is.
