The majority of coffee I make daily is drip coffee (with a metal or paper cone filter) for all the reasons well stated in this article. Unfortunately, I am rushed most mornings and want at least three 8 oz. cups of black coffee to start my day. The drip coffee maker I use makes 24 oz. of coffee that I pour into a 24 oz. insulated cup to keep it warm and from burning on the hot plate of the coffee maker. I then pour the coffee from the insulated cup into a ceramic mug for drinking as needed. The insulated thermal cup is also portable so I can take it with me if I need to be mobile.
My coffee preference on days off when I am not hurried is pour over. I enjoy the slow ritual of hand grinding the coffee beans in a burr grinder, then carefully paying full focus and attention to each step of the brewing process once it is fully underway. It might be one cup, or enough to fill an insulated carafe. Once brewed, I engage myself in an enriching leisure activity that I can enjoy with my coffee. This is more than just making the best cup of coffee, it is part of a relaxing ritual, almost ceremonial that ushers in a time out, moment of mindfulness and complete pause from a hectic life.
