When I started buying specialty coffee and beans 30 years ago, before global trade and the internet made single origin coffee available to the levels it is today, some blends were very good but a consistent supply of them was hard to find. I gravitated to the darkest of roasted coffee as a result, gaining a level of consistency in taste and overall coffee experience that met my expectations, regardless of the source. Only recently, as fresh and affordable single roast coffee beans became more readily available, I began to trust purchasing the lighter roasts, and it has turned out to be a surprisingly wonderful experience!
I don’t claim to have been a coffee expert 30 years ago, and it was mostly trial and error, and “knowing what I like” that led me down the darkest roast path I followed for decades. I still love my French and Italian roast coffees, but my venture into the lighter roasts from that path will continue. I am no longer afraid of the light!
